What does this data set describe?

Title: Game Lands - Wildlife Resources Commission
Abstract:
The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Commission and the NC Center for Geographic Information and Analysis developed the GIS data set, WRC Game Lands, to enhance management and planning, citing and impact analysis in areas directly affecting WRC Game Lands. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission assumed sole responsibility for all updates to the data set after the May 1999 update. The current updates enable the user to identify all publicly-owned Game Lands managed by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission as outlined in the "Hunting and Fishing Maps for North Carolina Game Lands 2001-2002" publication.

4.) filename: gmlwrc1298 The December 1998 update
to this layer consisted of projecting the data from NAD27 datum,
State Plane projection, units of measure feet TO: NAD83 DATUM,
State Plane PROJECTION, UNITS OF MEASURE METERS. This was
done to comply with the NC Geographic Information Coordinating
Council's "Statement of Direction for North Carolina Corporate
Geographic Database Horizontal Reference, Datum and Unit of
Measure". This reprojecting was done in various ways depending
on the data type and content. Vector data was projected
using the 'project' command in ESRI's Arc software and topology
was cleaned and built based on coverage needs. Raster data was
projected using ESRI's Grid module and various steps as applicable.

3.) filename: gmlwrc595 (previously called nc.gml595)
The May 16, 1995 update included the addition of game lands
in Jackson County, especially in Panthertown Valley. The areas
are found on Big Ridge, Cashiers, Highlands, and Lake Toxaway
7.5 Minute quads. The data were provided by the US Forest Service,
and Holly Selig was the contact. Any questions concerning Jackson
County should be directed toward the US Forest Service.

2.) filename: gmlwrc195 (previously called nc.gml195)
The January 9, 1995 update included the following:
a.) Joining the attribute information of the polygons in place
of the lookup table reference numbers.
b.) A missing polygon in the Pisgah National Forest was corrected.

1.) filename: gmlwrc90 (previously called nc.gml1990)

The original boundaries of the publicly owned Game Lands in North Carolina were recompiled from the "Hunting and Fishing Maps for North Carolina Game Lands, 1989-90" onto USGS 1:100,000-scale topographic maps. The linework was digitized by NCCGIA then it was checked by light table review. Any necessary corrections were made and new check plots were run. Post processing involved edgematching and mapjoining across map borders to create the final statewide data set.

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

NC Wildlife Resources Commission, 1989, Hunting and Fishing Maps for North Carolina Game Lands: NC Wildlife Resources Commission, Raleigh, North Carolina.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission originally delineated the Game Lands onto mylar overlays mapped at 1:100,000 scale. NC CGIA digitized these areas and attributed them with Game Land name, type, owner, and public or private status. Attributes were checked by WRC staff. Subsequent updates and additions were made as previously outlined.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

Game Lands were originally marked on 1:100,000 USGS dlg overlays, which meet National Map Accuracy Standards, using a best estimate with reference to surrounding features. Boundaries drawn were digitized and check plots used to ensure correct boundary location. Subsequent updates and additions were made as previously outlined.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

These data represent all publicly-owned and managed Game Lands, or those managed cooperatively as Game Lands by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission and as outlined in the "Hunting and Fishing Maps for North Carolina Game Lands" publication.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

Using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the dataset was built for arc and polygon topology using the "build" command. The data set was then cleaned with a fuzzy tolerance of 1 foot. Topology has not been edited since the last build or clean.
