  2. What changes have been made?

    Date: 20020131 (change 1 of 4)
The following steps were performed by ESRI for Data & Maps 2002: Replaced demographic and agricultural attributes with the latest from Census SF1, ESRI BIS, and Census of Agriculture. Recreated ArcView legend file (.avl) and ArcGIS™ layer file (.lyr) file. Copied projection file (.prj).

The following steps were performed by ESRI: Extracted 1990 Census tract geography from GDT Dynamap/2000 v9.0, then aggregated it into counties and then into states (the boundaries, therefore, are consistent with the boundaries of the Census tracts and have all of the detailed vertices necessary to maintain consistency with the tract level of detail). Added demographic attributes from Summary Tape File-1A (STF-1A) data published by the U.S. Bureau of the Census based on the 1990 Census of Population. Added farm attributes from data published by the U.S. Bureau of the Census based on the 1987 Census of Agriculture. Added Pop2000 attribute from ESRI Business Information Solutions. Converted to North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83) by splitting the United States into–if present: Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands–and the 48 contiguous states (including District of Columbia); converting each to NAD83; then merging them together. Recalculated any attributes based on area. Created ArcGIS™ layer file (.lyr). Created ArcView legend file (.avl). Created projection file (.prj). Ran ArcView Avenue request ExportClean, and created spatial indices.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

The geospatial part of this data set was extracted from the 1990 Census Version TIGER/Line™ files (CD–ROM edition). The positional accuracy of the TIGER/Line coordinates varies with the source materials used but at best meets the established National Map Accuracy standards (+/- 167 feet approximately) where 1:100,000-scale maps from the USGS are the source. The Census Bureau cannot specify the accuracy of feature updates added by its field staff or of features derived from the GBF/DIME-Files or other map sources. Thus, the level of positional accuracy in the TIGER/Line files is not suitable for high-precision measurement applications such as engineering problems, property transfers, or other uses that might require highly accurate measurements of the earth's surface.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

After processing, the data set is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials. This file covers the extent only for the 48 contiguous states of the US and the District of Columbia. NBII-SAIN (ed.) created this file by clipping from from ESRI 2002 dtl_st.shp. NBII-SAIN website: (http://sain.nbii.gov/).

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

    No duplicate features are present.
