Revisions and updates to this layer include:
5.) filename: saesh1298 The file name was changed
at the request of the source agency from Proposed
Critical Habitat Areas, to Significant Aquatic Endangered
Species Habitats. It also superceded the older Spiny Mussels
data. The December 11, 1998 update included inclusion of streams
in the southeastern NC, northeastern NC, northcentral NC, central
NC, northwestern NC, and southwestern NC areas and changing
the data layer name from Proposed Critical Habitat Areas to
Significant Aquatic Endangered Species Habitats.
(previously called nc.pcha)
4.) filename: pcha695 (previously named nc.pcha695)
The June 13, 1995 update included changes in the AAT.
The items "DEM-CLASS" and "DEM-CL-DATE" were dropped.
No cartographic changes were made.
3.) filename: pcah394 (previously named nc.pcha394)
The March 3, 1994 version was the original data release.
2.) filename smtp1298.txt The December 1998 version was
projected from NAD27, state plane, feet to NAD83, state
plane, meters. THIS FILE WAS SUPERCEDED BY THE SAESH
DATA. Previously, the pcha and saesh files (above) were
being developed separately. The current version contains
spiny mussels and therefore superceded the older spiny
mussels data for the Tar-Pamlico river basin.
1.) filename smtp989.txt (previously called spiny.mussels)
The September 1989 version was the first release of the
spiny mussels file.
This file replaced the Spiny Mussels file (smtp /statsp)
and Proposed Critical Habitat Areas files (pcha).

This data was created to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS), and to help protect sensitive areas by identifying streams which contain Significant Aquatic Endangered Species Habitats.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission presented NCCGIA with its field notes, and a WRC staff member identified pertinent streams from the existing NC CGIA data layer 1:100,000-scale hydrography, on screen. These were copied to a new coverage and attributes checked.
The Significant Aquatic Endangered Species Habitats were copied from an existing data layer, 1:100,000-scale hydrography. This layer was digitized from either 1:100,000- or 1:24,000-scale maps, USGS DLGs which meet National Map Accuracy Standards.
These data represent the locations and identities of Significant Aquatic Endangered Species Habitats as identified by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
Using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the data set was built for arc topology using the "build" command. The data set was then had its topology cleaned. Topology has not been edited since the last build or clean.
