U.S. Urbanized Areas provides information about the locations, names, and urban codes of urbanized areas primarily for national planning applications.
Attribute and geospatial data
The Bureau of the Census Urbanized Area database was derived from the TIGER database and published in 1992. It was created from data created at a scale of 1:100,000 or better.
The following steps were performed by ESRI: Extracted data set from the Bureau of the Census Urbanized Area Boundaries within the National Transportation Atlas Databases. Generalized the data (tolerance unknown). Converted to North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). Created ArcGIS™ layer file (.lyr). Created ArcView legend file (.avl). Created projection file (.prj). Ran ArcView Avenue request ExportClean, and created spatial indices.
Metadata imported.
The geospatial part of this data set was derived from the TIGER database with a positional accuracy of +/- 80 meters, and then generalized (tolerance unknown). Generalization reduced the positional accuracy and is unknown.
After processing, the data set is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials. This shapefile covers only the south central and the eastern half of the US. NBII-SAIN (ed.) created this file by clipping from from ESRI 2002 urban.shp. NBII-SAIN website: (http://sain.nbii.gov/).
No duplicate features are present. The shapefile is exported using Avenue request ExportClean. This request verifies and enforces the correctness of shapes.
