U.S. National Atlas Urbanized Areas provides information about the locations, names, and populations of urbanized areas for conducting geographic analysis on national and large regional scales.
Attribute and geospatial data
Urban polygons from the Digital Chart of the World (DCW) CD-ROM were extracted and converted to ARC/INFO format. Where the urban boundaries extend beyond the 1:2,000,000-scale shoreline, the 1:2,000,000-scale shoreline was used by "CLIPPING" the urban polygons. Names of the urban areas were added. In large metropolitan areas many smaller areas were labeled as part of the metropolitan area. The state in which the urban area is located was also added. Several areas were modified to conform to the 1:2,000,000-scale hydrography layer. Some smaller polygons that represent undeveloped areas within the urban area were removed and merged with the larger urban area. Military reservations were removed. Revisions: 1) 6/29/98 - Corrected ellipsoid name from WGS84 to GRS1980 and changed flattening ratio. 2) 11/13/98 - Added State FIPS attribute; moved polygons for Altus, OK and Olustee, OK; and edited State attribute for Kansas City and Washington metro area. Additionally, the data was "clipped" to the southern and eastern states with ESRI ArcMap 8.2.
The following steps were performed by ESRI: Downloaded the ArcView Shapefile version of the data, urbanap020.tar.gz, from http://www.nationalatlas.gov/atlasftp.html and extracted it. Removed unneeded attributes. Reduced the width of attributes. Created ArcGIS layer file (.lyr). Created ArcView legend file (.avl). Created projection file (.prj). Ran ArcView Avenue request ExportClean, and created spatial indices.

The geospatial part of this data set was originally extracted from the Digital Chart of the World at 1:1,000,000-scale with some geospatial data from a USGS 1:2,000,000-scale hydrography layer. It was updated several times using various sources whose horizontal positional accuracies are unknown.
After processing, the data set is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials. This shapefile covers only the south central and the eastern half of the US. NBII-SAIN (ed.) created this file by clipping from from ESRI 2002 urban_dtl.shp. NBII-SAIN website: (http://sain.nbii.gov/).
No duplicate features are present. The shapefile is exported using Avenue request ExportClean. This request verifies and enforces the correctness of shapes.
