What does this data set describe?

Title: Land Trust Priority Areas
Abstract:
The Conservation Fund, using 1:100,000 Digital Raster Graphics, developed the digital Land Trust Priorities map of areas identified by land trust organizations in the State of North Carolina as priority conservation areas. The dataset contains three types of data, buffered riparian corridors, priority polygons and land trust targeted tracts.

Why was the data set created?

This data was created to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS).

This data was created to assist the Clean Water Management Trust Fund, conservation organizations, local governments and communities identify the location of NC's critical unprotected natural resources and the important linkages between these resources. This data set is, by no means, complete. Rather it is an attempt to begin mapping these critical resources to provide a foundation for future efforts.

It is critical to recognize that the majority of the areas identified in this data set are currently not under conservation protection. The identified priority areas are intended to provide a general geographic representation of priorities, although they may contain smaller parcels under protection. They are identified as high priorities for individual and/or partnership efforts to protect them either by fee simple, easement, or stewardship agreements. In addition it should be noted that certain highly sensitive resources have been omitted from this dataset to protect their security. Absence of identification as a priority in this dataset does not indicate that a given area is not a priority, but rather data should be used to identify areas appropriate for focus of future conservation efforts.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

    None (source 1 of 1)

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 1998 (process 1 of 2)
Data was collected from land trusts on 1:100,00 mylars and paper maps. Some land trusts submitted narrative descriptions of the extent of riparian corridors.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

Attributes were checked by the GIS Technician for accuracy.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

Datasets such as hydrography, transportation, county boundaries, were used as backcovers during on screen digitizing to ensure accuracy.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

This data is a first cut collection of land trust priorities from across the State of North Carolina. Because it was, and will be, necessary to exclude some data to protect the security of highly sensitive resources, this data set should never be considered "complete."

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

Using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the dataset was built for arc and polygon topology using the "build" command. The data set was then cleaned with the "clean" command. Topology has not been edited since the last build or clean.

The dataset contains three types of data, buffered riparian corridors, priority polygons and land trust targeted tracts. Riparian corridors were either on screen digitized from 1:100,000 DRG's or pulled from NCCGIA's 1:100,000 NC hydrography data layer, and subsequently buffered 500 meters. Priority areas and land trust targeted tracts were on screen digitized from hand drawn polygons on paper maps.
