Title: Land Trust Conservation Properties
Abstract:
This data layer consists of conservation areas drawn on 1:24,000 scale USGS quadrangles by the participating land trusts. The Conservation Fund coordinated the land trusts mapping efforts. The conservation areas were manually digitized by CGIA. This layer was created with the cooperation of The Clean Water Management Trust Fund.

Why was the data set created?

This data was created for The Clean Water Management Trust Fund. This data was also created to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS).

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

    None (source 1 of 1)
Survey, US Geological , Unknown, USGS 7.5 Minute series paper maps: US Geological Survey, Reston, Virginia.

    Other_Citation_Details: Published map series
    Type_of_Source_Media: Paper
    Source_Scale_Denominator: 24000
Source_Contribution: Paper maps used to delineate land trust boundaries

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 1998 (process 1 of 1)
CGIA manually digitized the paper 1:24,000 USGS quadrangles creating digital files. Processing of these files included: editing linework, edgematching, map-joining, labeling, attributing, running checkplots, submitting questions to The Conservation Fund, correcting discrepancies, and creating metadata.

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

The Conservation Fund developed this accuracy table. site acreage allowable error between deed acreage and digitized acreage

    0 - 10 less than 50%
    10 - 100 less than 35%
100 and above less than 25%

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

Boundaries were hand-drawn on USGS 1:24,000 scale quadrangles and then manually digitized. Checkplots were created at 1:24,000 scale to ensure accuracy. A spreadsheet database was used to ensure attribute accuracy.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

Five sites were left out of the final coverage because their acreage as digitized was in excess of the allowable error as defined by The Conservation Fund:

Lake Brandt Greenway - Piedmont Land Conservancy
Little Alamance Creek - Piedmont Land Conservancy
Shipyard Landing Preserve - North Carolina Coastal Land Trust
Turkey Creek - Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy
    Walcott - Pacolet Area Conservancy

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

Using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the data set was built for arc and polygon topology using the "build" command. The data set was then cleaned with a fuzzy tolerance of (1 meter.) Topology has not been edited since the last build or clean.
