The Green River/Broad River Watershed

Four sites including three sites on the Green River and one site on the Big Hungry River

All of the sites on the Green River rate excellent and the one on the Big Hungry River rates good. The Green River watershed exhibits very little disturbance from human activities. Water quality remains good under all weather circumstances. The only exception is occasional sedimentation at the site on the Big Hungry River. Otherwise all parameters remain within normal ranges. This watershed may require some protection in the future if it is to maintain its high standards.

(Three additional sites monitored by the Lake Lure VWIN program include one on The Broad River, one on Hickory Creek, and one on Reedypatch Creek)

The three sites in the Broad River watershed exhibit more significant sedimentation problems and rate lower. The site on Hickory Creek rates good, the site on the Broad River rates average, and the site on Reedypatch Creek rates below average. In dry weather conditions, all of these sites show excellent water quality, but rains can bring in large loads of sediment. This is a serious problem for residents of the Town of Lake Lure who must frequently fund dredging operations to clear some of the sediment from the lake. As they have little control over sediment originating from another county, it is the responsibility of the source region to make efforts to reduce the problem.
